Fragments of the Imagination
Div. II, First place, Mixed Media
I collect print materials such as old books and magazines, and cut out interesting bits of photos, graphics or patterns. I then piece the cutouts together like a jigsaw puzzle without pre-determining what the final composition will be. Each cutout piece has no specific meaning or identity once removed from the original source. It is just one potential fragment of a larger unknown picture. But when they are cohesively combined, a new and fantastical scene evolves with unexpected connotations and juxtapositions. Just as the original source materials have been repurposed, the imagery within them has been re-contexualized and opened to new interpretations.
